Tidy house, tidy mind
Updated May 13th, 2024
The connection between tidy house and tidy mind is different for everyone.
For me it is paramount. I find it helps my mental health to have a tidy home and to be organised.
However it wasn’t always that way!
There was a time when my life was chaotic and so was my home.
A few years ago I had an enforced and ultimately inevitable break from real life and everything in my world slowed down. For the first time in decades I was forced to stop. As life and my brain slowed down I looked around and realised my home was as frantic as my mind. The home I had been living in came to the forefront and I realised it was contributing to the lack of control I felt.
Slowly I started to tackle each area and began to form better habits. I was not perfect but it was progress. Soon I found the repetitiveness was soothing. My mental health improved with the structure and order of my new way of living.
I realised that once I had a system in place the upkeep was so much simpler. I knew exactly where everything was. There was no frantic searching for items and I was encouraged by the onus I had on my life. I felt in control of something when other areas of my life were still out of my control.
As real life resumed and normality crept back in I kept the habits I had adopted. I now have the same routine before bed and when I get up. It happens regardless of anything else and is a constant for me. Whether I have an early start or late night the routine is the same.
Little and often is the way for me.
For you it may be different but the important part is finding what works for you. Get a routine and stick to it. It will make your life easier and although it may seem daunting at first, once it becomes a habit you will do it without even thinking. And make your life easier.
And lets face it, don’t you deserve a calm and peaceful home? Let me tell you…you do!
